San Diego County
San Diego County offers the perfect climate for year-round skating. For the area's in-line community, that is both a blessing and a curse. As big and beautiful as Mission Bay is, so many people crowd onto the boardwalks, that conflicts among trail user are beginning to result in speed limits, restricted areas, and other impositions curbing the freedom that personifies outdoor skating.
Fortunately, the entire west county is laced with miles of dedicated bikeways, and they are all identified on San Diego's excellent bicycle commuter map. The routes most suited to skating are detailed in this chapter, including an interesting range of river and lake trails waiting to be explored. You will be introduced to some truly unique skates that you are likely to have all to yourself.
To avoid the bottlenecks at the bay, some of the area's more experienced skaters have been redefining the notion of skateable terrain. They are learning to appreciate (and in some cases, relish) the seemingly boundless opportunities available in San Diego streets with and without bike lanes. The San Diego Skate Coalition is the heart of this movement. Their athletic tours of the city streets are building a strong corps of street-savvy skaters who are gearing up both literally and figuratively for a broader vision of the future of San Diego in-line skating.
